A state police cruiser struck a car driving the wrong way on Interstate 91, attempting to stop it before the car fled the scene early Sunday, according to police.

Connecticut State Police said in a statement that a trooper responded to reports of a wrong-way driver heading south into northbound traffic near Exit 33 in Hartford around 2:45 a.m. Sunday.

The state trooper’s attempt to stop the driver was unsuccessful, however, and the officer was forced to “take evasive action…contacting the driver’s side” of the wrong-way vehicle, police said in the statement.
