Police fatally shot a suspect who was barricaded inside a home in the Beverlywood neighborhood of Los Angeles after an attempted burglary overnight.

Officers responded to the home on Halm Avenue and Beverlywood Street around 3:30 a.m. Monday, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

The officers saw smoke coming from the house and called the fire department. Responding firefighters entered the home and found a man armed with a knife.

At one point the suspect left the home and officers fired a beanbag gun at him, but he ran back inside, police say.

He stayed inside the home, prompting a call for SWAT assistance and a standoff that lasted several hours.

The situation took a turn for the worse around 7 a.m. after the suspect finally emerged from the home.

AIR7 was over the scene as the suspect stood in a driveway in front of several officers with their weapons drawn. At one point, the suspect appeared to charge toward the officers, who then opened fire.

The suspect, who has not been identified, died at the scene. Police said a large knife was found near the suspect's body.

"Until the officer's body-worn (camera), which was on during the incident, is viewed by investigators, I'm hesitant to talk about exactly what the suspect did with the knife," said Detective Meghan Aguilar. "What we know is that he was armed with it at the time of the officer-involved shooting."

A man who lives next to the home told Eyewitness News that the suspect initially tried to enter his home through a window. That didn't work, so he got into the home next door.

The neighbor says the woman who lives there ran outside. The neighbor said when the suspect came back outside, he was not wearing clothing. The neighbor's brother sprayed him with a water hose but that didn't appear to have any impact.
