A man in his 20s is expected to survive after charging Orange County deputies with a firearm earlier this year and being shot multiple times, authorities announced.

Newly released video of the April 24 incident shows the suspect, who has not been identified, approaching a townhome near Antonio Parkway and Cow Camp Road in Rancho Mission Viejo at around 2:30 a.m. armed with a gun, prompting a 911 call.

When asked by emergency dispatch why the man might be approaching the residence with a gun, the caller didn’t hesitate.

“Because he is obsessed with my girlfriend,” the victim can be heard saying in the 911 call. “I don’t know where he came from or how he found her address exactly, but he walked up, started banging on the door.”

Moments before the 911 call, the victim opened the door and saw the man reaching for his waistband, he quickly pushed the suspect back and closed the door.

The suspect fled the area before deputies arrived.

Around 3:45 a.m., deputies spotted his car at Rimgate Park in Lake Forest. The suspect initially refused attempts at a traffic stop, prompting a short pursuit before he stopped the car, got out and rushed them with a gun in his hand.

Deputies opened fire, striking him multiple times. They immediately began life-saving measures, with the suspect ultimately rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

A large knife and a handgun were recovered at the scene.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing. The suspect remains hospitalized and is expected to face multiple felony charges upon his release, according to Orange County Sheriff’s Department officials in a critical incident briefing video.
