ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) — The Albuquerque Police Department is releasing details on an officer-involved shooting that left one person dead and three others injured downtown on July 3.

APD said Stephen Griego, 41, was shot and killed in the shooting. A video on social media shows Griego standing on a scooter when he was approached by a man who pushed him. Video later shows the man trying to slap and push Griego, who then ran to the other side of a barricade. A separate video showed two men approaching him and Griego shooting towards them. APD Chief Cecily Barker said officers in the area heard shots fired in the area of 3rd and Central. When they responded to the area, they saw two people who seemed to be in an altercation and one of them looked to be armed.

APD spokesman Gilbert Gallegos said in a statement that four officers ran towards the gunfire and shot at Griego several times. Police said in the confrontation Juan Ortega, 40, and Richard Thyberg, 37, were shot by Griego. Their injuries were not considered to be life-threatening. APD said Ortega died from an apparent overdose the following week. A bystander was also shot about a block away from the incident by a stray bullet. Investigators said they believe that an officer shot that round, but further ballistics tested is needed to determine where the round came from. That victim’s injuries are not considered life-threatening.
