A police pursuit that started in downtown Los Angeles ended with officers shooting and killing a suspect on the 5 Freeway off-ramp in East Los Angeles Wednesday. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) said the pursuit began around 9:40 a.m. when Central Division patrol officers near Central and Towne avenues spotted a newer model BMW wanted for a felony crime. The vehicle was stolen and the suspect driving the BMW had a felony warrant, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said."(Officers) tried to stop the vehicle, conduct a traffic stop. The vehicle fled. A pursuit ensued," McDonnell said. The LAPD said officers followed the suspect onto the 5 Freeway.About one minute later, the BMW turned onto the Olympic Boulevard exit in East LA.The LAPD said that while on the off-ramp the suspect “abruptly conducted a U-turn and accelerated against traffic, colliding head-on with an oncoming police vehicle.”The chase ended with the crash. After the BMW came to a halt, the LAPD said the driver — identified as Jesus Ernesto Jaime, 30 — came out of the stolen car and stood behind the vehicle.Officers told Jaime to surrender.Instead, the LAPD said in a statement released Thursday that Jaime “removed a semi-automatic handgun from his waistband and pointed it at an officer.”Officers fired their weapons at Jaime. The shots hit the suspect, and he fell to the ground, McDonnell said.No LAPD officers were injured by gunfire in the standoff.Jaime was arrested. He died at the scene, the LAPD confirmed.Police said there was a passenger inside the BMW who complied with the officers’ commands and was arrested at the scene. Two officers were taken to a local hospital for injuries suffered in the crash and were later released from the hospital. The stolen car was recovered by police. The LAPD said Thursday that the officer-involved shooting remains under investigation.
