Video from court records shows the moments leading up to and after Chesterfield Police shot and killed 34-year-old Charles Byers last year.On July 8, 2023, Chesterfield officers were called to the 1200 block of Wycliff Court for reports of a suspicious man entering a garage and attempting to enter other homes by cutting a window screen and trying door handles.When police arrived, they found Byers on the road carrying a hatchet. Officers attempted to de-escalate the situation with verbal instructions and later with a taser; however, Byers did not comply.Officers fired multiple shots that struck Byers.The department says the entire incident took place in around 45 seconds. Officers and a nearby community member immediately rendered aid to Byers, but he died at the scene.12 On Your Side viewed body camera footage earlier this year of the shooting. That video was made public this week through federal court records.
