Las Vegas, NV -Las Vegas Metro police on Tuesday released dramatic surveillance video that captured the officer-involved shooting of a carjacking suspect on Friday.That suspect, 27-year-old Jamal Gwynn, nearly ran the officer who fired on him over with his own patrol vehicle.Metro Undersheriff Kevin McMahill said officers about 10:30 p.m. on Friday were notified of a robbery that occurred in a garage. McMahill said that Gwynn, who was armed with a pistol, stole a vehicle. The stolen vehicle, McMahill said, was equipped with OnStar in-vehicle security. The vehicle was remotely shut off in the area of 1150 N. Buffalo Dr., and flashing lights were activated to notify officers of the vehicle’s location.Metro Officer Pat Sherwood was the first to arrive. He located the vehicle in a cul-de-sac.Sherwood issued verbal commands to Gwynn, which were ignored. Gwynn then dropped his gun in the stolen vehicle and fled on foot. However, McMahill said, Sherwood did not realize Gwynn had dropped his firearm.A foot pursuit ensued, Gwynn fell, and Sherwood attempted to take him into custody. However, Gwynn got back on his feet and the pursuit continued.Gwynn circled back and entered Sherwood’s patrol vehicle. Security video shows Sherwood fired several shots at Gwynn as he was inside the vehicle, two of which struck him in the chest. Gwynn was grazed by a third bullet. McMahill said the vehicle prevented the bullets from penetrating Gwynn’s chest cavity.Moments later, Gwynn put the vehicle into gear, backed up, accelerated forward and nearly ran Sherwood over.Gwynn managed to drive about 1.5 miles before the patrol vehicle got a flat and he was taken into custody by several officers.Gwynn was taken to University Medical Center for treatment and later booked into the Clark County Detention Center on numerous charges
