Manhattan, NY — On Saturday, April 11, 2026, at approximately 9:38 a.m., Detective Ryan Giuffre and his partner, Detective Anthony Manetta, were standing on the mezzanine of the 4, 5, 6, and 7 subway lines when they were approached by a civilian witness who informed them that there was a person on the train who was brandishing a machete. The detectives walked toward the platform stairs where they encountered a civilian victim who was injured and then the suspect, 44-year-old Anthony Griffin, who was ascending the staircase while brandishing the machete in his right hand. Detective Giuffre ordered Griffin to drop his weapon several times, however, Griffin refused to do so and descended the staircase back to the train platform. Detective Giuffre and Detective Manetta followed Griffin and again confronted him on the train platform. The detectives repeatedly ordered Griffin to drop the machete, however, Griffin continued to brandish the weapon in his right hand and shout erratically, while moving both towards them and away from them. Griffin then moved towards Detective Giuffre with the machete still in his right hand and the blade facing outward. Detective Giuffre then discharged two rounds from his service firearm, striking Griffin. Griffin was taken into custody and transported via ambulance to NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, where he was pronounced deceased. The investigation revealed that prior to his confrontation with Detective Giuffre and Detective Manetta, Griffin had slashed three civilian victims with the machete, causing serious physical injuries. Detective Giuffre and Detective Manetta were each equipped with a body-worn camera, both of which were activated during this incident.
