A man faces several charges after he crashed into a Nashville police officer’s patrol car Tuesday morning while fleeing a traffic stop, officials said.

According to the Metro Nashville Police Department (MNPD), the incident took place at approximately 1:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29.

Authorities reported 22-year-old Carlos Esquivel hit the officer’s vehicle as he attempted to flee from a traffic stop. Before the incident, he was reportedly seen driving his Dodge Challenger recklessly along Korean Veterans Boulevard.

Esquivel reportedly then continued onto the westbound lanes of Interstate 24 and began doing donuts in front of an officer’s vehicle while the patrol car had its emergency equipment activated. Esquivel then accelerated toward the patrol car, striking it head-on before fleeing up an entrance ramp.

An MNPD officer was injured in the crash and was taken to an area hospital. According to police, the officer was treated and released on Tuesday afternoon.

Esquivel was booked on four separate charges:

Aggravated assault on an officer

Felony evading arrest

Reckless driving

Leaving the scene of a personal injury accident

As of publication, Esquivel is jailed on a $27,500 bond.
