On the afternoon of Saturday, January 24, a hit man's attack in the El Peñón neighborhood, west of Cali in the Valle del Cauca, left one dead and five suspects detained by the Cali Metropolitan Police. The victim was identified as Steven Valencia Serna, 30, who was approached by several armed men while in the company of his relatives in front of a restaurant in a busy shopping area. The incident originated from the intention to collect an outstanding debt, according to the first investigations.

Valencia Serna turned over his cell phone to the attackers to make a call related to the payment owed, but a disagreement resulted in an intense shooting that caused serious injuries in the man, who was transferred to a care center where he died. The suspects tried to flee on foot, but were captured a few meters from the scene, where three firearms were also seized. The CTI of the Prosecutor's Office carried out the lifting of the body and the collection of evidence, with testimonies collected by the newspaper El País that support the sequence of events.

The five detainees are in the process of prosecution, while the authorities continue the investigations to fully clarify the motives of the crime. This event reflects the crisis of insecurity that plagues Cali, where December 2025 exceeded 100 murders and the annual total reached 1,065 homicides, figures that evidence the persistence of violence in the city.
