A riot in Cardiff may have been sparked by rumors that two teenagers who were killed in a crash were being chased by police.

Alun Michael, the Police and Crime Commissioner in South Wales, said a fatal road accident involving an off-road bike or scooter appeared to have triggered widespread disorder in the Welsh capital on Monday night.

Around a dozen police officers were injured during the disturbance which saw Molotov cocktails hurled and cars torched on the street in Ely. The windscreen of at least one service vehicle was smashed.

South Wales Police confirmed two teenagers died in a crash at around 6 pm in Snowden Road and the collision had already occurred when officers arrived. One victim has been named locally as Kyrees Sullivan, while the other is believed to be Harvey Evans.

Mr. Michael told the BBC on Tuesday that investigations were underway to establish what caused the violence to unfold, but that early indications suggested false rumors of a police chase in the fatal accident may have played a part.
