Motorbike racer Joao Eloi has tragically died following a horrific high-speed crash at the iconic Interlagos circuit in Brazil.

Eloi, 57, was competing in the SuperBike Brasil championship in Sao Paulo on Saturday as part of the SuperSport 400cc School category when the fatal incident took place. The footage shows other contestants coming around a bend and driving at speed when all of a sudden, Eloi's bike appears and looks to skate, causing him to smash into a crash barrier.

Along with his bike, he then slides back across the track, narrowly avoiding being hit by the other racers before coming to a stop next to the other side. As he lies lifeless on the tarmac, race organisers can be seen waving yellow flags indicating to the other racers that there has been an accident.

Local media reports said that Eloi lost control of his motorcycle and collided with another biker before he hit the crash barrier. In a statement, SuperBike Brasil pointed out that "despite the prompt care provided by the championship rescue team, in an ICU ambulance, followed by rapid referral to the racetrack's emergency room, Joao ended up dying in the outpatient clinic."
