A man was injured after an explosion occurred in the parking lot of a Holiday Inn Express at 1024 W. Sugarland Highway in Clewiston.Around 5:30 p.m., authorities received calls reporting the incident, according to the Hendry County Sheriff’s Office.During the investigation, it was discovered that an explosion had happened while the man was working inside the back of his vehicle.“I was in bed on the side here when I hear, boom! It shook the house, whole house would be shaking, it was bad,” said neighbor George Wood.According to the HCSO, the man was transported to the hospital for medical care.NBC2 spoke with the Clewiston fire chief, who said the victim remains in a West Palm Beach hospital in serious condition.While fire crews on the scene were investigating the explosive, they discovered a “small amount of undetected explosives,” the HCSO said.The Collier County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad then helped with the disposal of the items.The areas from San Luis to Berner Road and south to Ventura to Sagamore were temporarily closed as crews disposed of the undetonated devices.The disposal of the explosives has since been completed, and roadways are open.The Clewiston fire chief said the victim worked in the fire suppression business, and he was using his car as a workspace.
