Brooklyn, NY — On Tuesday, November 1, 2022, at approximately 4:01 p.m., in front of 202 New Lots Avenue, Brooklyn, Lieutenant Adan Munoz, assigned to patrol in the 75th Precinct, discharged two shots from his service firearm during a confrontation with an armed subject, who advanced toward him while brandishing two large knives. The subject was identified as 30-year-old James Olla. At approximately 3:30 PM on November 1, 2022, Lieutenant Munoz was alerted that Olla was wanted for an assault that occurred earlier in the day. During that incident, Olla assaulted two persons, one of which required hospitalization. In an effort to locate Olla, Lieutenant Munoz then travelled to 202 New Lots Avenue with three other officers, attired in uniform and utilizing marked NYPD vehicles. Once there, Olla was found to be seated on the front steps of the location. Lieutenant Munoz called out to Olla and began to approach him. Olla then rose to his feet with two large knives in his right hand, switched one knife to his left hand, and began to advance toward Lieutenant Munoz while brandishing the weapons above his head. Lieutenant Munoz shouted several times for Olla to drop his weapons, however, he continued to advance. During Olla’s advance, Lieutenant Munoz discharged two shots from his service firearm, striking him twice. Olla fell to ground and was taken into custody without further incident. He was taken by ambulance to Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, where he was treated for his injuries. Olla was subsequently arrested and charged with Attempted Assault 1st, Attempted Assault on a Police Officer, Menacing of a Police Officer, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd, and other related charges.
