A Shelby Township police officer who shot and killed an armed Troy man in June will not face criminal charges. The Macomb County Sheriff's Office investigated the June 3 incident that unfolded near The Hot Spot coffee shop located at 48761 Van Dyke Avenue and turned over all of the information gathered by investigators to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office. After what Macomb County Prosecutor Peter Lucido described as an "exhaustive review" of the evidence, his office will not file charges against the officer."It was a justified shooting and no charges will be authorized," Lucido said.Macomb County Sheriff Anthony Wickersham said a total of eight shots were fired by one of the two Shelby Township officers that initiated a traffic stop of a 2019 white Dodge Caravan driven by Thomas Antonio Jackson, 41, of Troy. The van was registered to his mother.Wickersham said the two officers each have seven years of experience with the Shelby Township department and the whole incident spanned about 32 seconds. He added eight shots were fired by the single officer with one striking Jackson in the leg, one in the buttock and three in the upper front torso."Mr. Jackson was stopped for a traffic violation, exited his vehicle and fled on foot," Wickersham said. "A Taser was deployed twice at which time Jackson pulled out a handgun and continued to run."Wickersham and other authorities at the press conference did not divulge what violation prompted the traffic stop.
