Body cam video was released Thursday that shows a man shoot an Algood police officer in Putnam County last fall.

Floyd Cook, 62, was stopped by the officer on Oct. 24 while he was driving a black pickup truck.

The video shows the officer ask Cook several questions, such as his name and what he was doing, before noticing his truck was in reverse.

Officer Ahscari Valencia is heard saying, “You got your car in reverse?” Cook nods his head to say yes.

“Why?” the officer asked.

And at that moment, Cook is seen raising a black handgun from inside the truck.

At least 10 shots were fired toward the officer, who first raised his hands in defense then took off running while alerting other officers.

Officer Valencia was hit one time. Luckily, he was wearing a bullet proof vest and only suffered minor injuries.

Cook sped off down Burton Branch Road. Officer Valencia is heard saying he didn’t know where he went as he was trying to take cover.

“The shot that came out of Cook’s gun hit him [Valencia] right in the chest, where his heart would have been,” said Algood Police Chief Gary Harris. “It was a .45. so if he hadn’t had that vest on, it would have probably killed him.”

Officer Valencia has since transferred to work at Tennessee Tech University in Cookeville.

Cook reportedly fled to Kentucky and was added to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation’s Top 10 Most Wanted list. The U.S. Marshals assisted in the search.

He was able to evade authorities until he was shot and killed by officers in Kentucky after firing at them almost a week later.
