A broadcast commentator was shot inside the announcer’s booth by an unidentified person in Calamba town, Misamis Occidental on Sunday, November 5.Calamba Police Officer-in-Charge Corporal Eliver Quico named the victim as 57-year-old Juan Tumpang Jumalon, a resident of Purok 2, Barangay Don Bernardo Neri, Calamba where his radio station 94.7 Calamba Gold FM is situated.Popularly known as “Johnny Walker,” Jumalon was on-board in his 5:30 daily morning “Pahapyod sa Kabuntagon” commentary program when the incident happened. He was discussing the results of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections at that time.The suspect entered the victim’s house claiming to air an important announcement, Quico said. But the assailant was armed and shot the victim twice, without any provocation, pumping bullets on Jumalon’s face and back portion of the head.The gunman fled to unknown direction, the town police chief claimed, while he immediately directed the setting up of checkpoints in strategic locations.Family members rushed the victim to Calamba District Hospital where physician on-duty Geopeter Manisan pronounced Jumalon dead.He became the second broadcast journalist killed this year, the other was Cresenciano “Cris” Bundoquin of Oriental Mindoro in May 2023.
