On July 29, 2024, a red Mercury SUV was stolen along with the victim's cell phone and credit cards. Detectives spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. The suspect, later identified as Grant Allen Simmons Jr. (DOB 10/27/1970), fled, refusing to stop. Officers successfully deployed a tire deflation device, but the vehicle continued, crashing through a barricade at Home Depot before driving into a retention pond. The suspect fled on foot but was swiftly taken into custody and charged with theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a stolen credit card, fleeing and eluding police, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
