Irvine, California — On August 5, 2024, at about 2:15 a.m., a caregiver at a residence on Whistling Swan called 9-1-1 after discovering his patient was bloody and unresponsive. When Irvine Police Department (IPD) responded to the house, they found an unoccupied gold Honda minivan that crashed into the front of the house. The caregiver was contacted and officers ultimately made entry into the residence where they located the victim, who used a wheelchair for mobility, deceased from apparent stab wounds. He was identified as 38-year-old John Bash.

As officers were canvassing the area for the minivan driver, an IPD officer encountered the registered owner at Stonecreek South and West Yale Loop. During the exchange, the officer observed the suspect, 47-year-old Aaron Matthew Shindle, holding a knife. Shindle raised the knife and advanced towards the officer when an officer-involved shooting occurred. A knife was recovered at the scene. Shindle was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. Preliminarily, the suspect is a former caregiver for the victim. Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding this incident. They do not believe there are any additional suspects.

A subsequent investigation revealed, Shindle was responsible for the homicide on Whistling Swan. He was a former caregiver to the homicide victim and the registered owner of the vehicle found crashed into the residence. Investigators discovered, Shindle crashed his Honda Odyssey into to the homicide victim's residence, he exited the vehicle and entered the victim's home, he then entered the victim's room where he repeatedly and maliciously stabbed the victim over and over again. Shindle then fled the location on foot and was wandering about the area until he was contacted by the officer at Stonecreek South and West Yale Loop.
