Bertha Gisela Gaytán was at a rally in the town of San Miguel Octopan when armed men approached and shot her six times. The Morena candidate for the municipal presidency of Celaya, Gisela Gaytán Gutiérrez, was murdered yesterday afternoon at a campaign event in the community of San Miguel Octopan. Gisela Gaytan led a walk in front of a crowd of flag-waving and cheering cheers. The voices of supporters shouting "Morena, Morena" were mixed between gunfire and shouting. Minutes after 6:00 p.m., armed men approached her on Miguel Hidalgo and Benito Juárez streets, in the downtown area, and fired six shots; The candidate fell lifeless and three of her companions were injured. Hours before the shooting, Gisela Gaytán reported at a press conference that she had requested protection from the Electoral Institute of the State of Guanajuato (IEEG) and the National Electoral Institute (INE) through Morena's state legal system."Assistance has already been requested through the state legal system in the party... That is the means that should be followed, not me as a candidate, no, but the party [Morena] requested it from the INE and the IEEG. Let's see if they have any answers to us about that today. But yes, it was requested," he said.The candidate opened her campaign yesterday morning at the Morelos Market in Celaya, where elements of the Municipal Police arrived to provide security."Yes, of course, there is already security and what better security than citizens, but, in addition, it is counted today. [I want] to thank you, the Secretariat of Citizen Security was taking care of us right now in the market... They were already taking care of us and yes, of course we do have [security]. That's where [police] came and thank you for taking care of us," he said at the press conference. Gisela Gaytán presented her slate and highlighted her work program, in which she placed security as a priority to recover peace in the municipality of Celaya, which is currently governed by the PAN, and to end corruption. She is the first candidate to be killed in this process; Previously, 26 aspirants were killed.
