An NYPD officer was injured when he was struck by a suspect who nearly hit a child and her mother while fleeing an attempted traffic stop in Queens on Sunday.

The incident happened at about 5 p.m. when an officer tried to stop a car in the borough's Corona neighborhood, WABC-TV reports. During the attempted stop, the suspect sped off in reverse and almost ran down "a small child walking with her mother and crashing into a building," NYPD Deputy Commissioner Kaz Daughtry stated in a news release.

"He then puts the car in drive, accelerates at an officer, strikes the officer as he tries to jump out of the way, pins the same cop between his car and a parked vehicle, and then takes off," he added.

A chase ensued, and the suspect struck multiple vehicles during the pursuit. Eventually, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.

After a pursuit that went from the subway to a nearby building, the suspect was finally apprehended.

The officer was treated for his injuries and is expected to recover.
