AHMEDABAD: A 29-year-old man died after setting himself on fire at a hospital in the Fatehwadi area of Ahmedabad on Thursday night, allegedly upset over unrequited love.

The man, identified as Kamran Pathan, confronted 28-year-old woman, who works at the hospital, before the incident.

The woman, who has been reportedly facing repeated harassment from Pathan, was currently undergoing treatment for burn injuries that she suffered during the incident.

Police said Pathan entered the hospital around 8.30pm carrying petrol. Following an argument near the reception area, he poured fuel on himself and ignited it. The flames spread rapidly in the corridor, injuring the woman who tried to save herself.

She collapsed after suffering burns. Another hospital staff member who tried to help the accused was also injured, said police.

Pathan, engulfed in fire, ran towards the staircase and fell from the first floor into a dental clinic on the ground level. Locals captured videos showing people trying to douse the flames using water, cloth, and a fire extinguisher.

Pathan was rushed to Sola Civil Hospital and later shifted to Asarva Civil Hospital, where he died shortly after midnight. The dental clinic also suffered damage due to fire. Sarkhej police inspector S A Gohil said that they have registered an accidental death case. He added that the woman's statement will be recorded once she stabilizes.
