Ahmad Abdullah, 25, was shot and killed by Cpl. Keith McSweeny, a 13-year department veteran, according to a news release from the Huntington Police Department.It was initially believed that Abdullah may have been in possession of a gun, however, investigators said he did not, the news release said.The news release said McSweeney has returned to work following leave with pay. The department described its critical incident policy:The purpose of the critical incident policy is to give an officer time to address occupational stress and trauma exposure with the assistance of mental health counseling through the city of Huntington’s employee assistance program. The officer also is evaluated by a mental health professional and must be certified by the health professional before the officer is permitted to return to duty. McSweeney was certified to return to duty by a mental health professional.Officers said they responded to the 400 block of 14th Street where Abdullah was uncooperative with police, stating he had a gun and was threatening to blow up a house. Police said Abdullah was fatally shot after charging the officer.In addition to the name of the officer involved in the shooting, investigators released audio of the 911 call, radio communication between dispatchers and police and body cam footage of the incident, which showed the man charging the officer.“First and foremost, we must remember that a family is mourning the loss of a loved one,” Huntington Police Chief Phil Watkins stated in a news release. “We cannot help the healing process by suppressing the truth. We can only help by ensuring that the truth is brought to light.”
