According to witness accounts, the man was performing maintenance on the boom tower of a dredge when he was pulled by a steel cable that became entangled around his body. He was then violently crushed against the structure of the equipment.

The impact caused extremely serious injuries, and the young man's body was practically torn in half due to the force exerted by the cable and the metal structure. He died at the scene before help arrived.
