AlbaceteA 64-year-old woman died this morning in Ayna (Albacete) during one of the bull runs being held in the town this weekend as part of its patron saint festivities. The woman, who was participating in the first run, was gored by one of the bulls as it wound through the town's streets.

"At one point along the route, in the Caves, the woman stood still at the barrier and when she started running, one of the bulls charged her," explained Juan Ángel Martínez, mayor of Ayna, in statements to SER.

The 112 emergency service in Castilla-La Mancha received the call at 10:55 a.m. Videos shared on social media by some of those attending the bull run show the woman outside the barriers, running in the opposite direction from the herd.

The woman, who was from Catalonia and spending a few days in Ayna with her family, died while being transported to the heliport after undergoing emergency surgery by paramedics at the scene. Another man, around 60 years old, was also injured during the bull run, gored in the arm by one of the bulls.

The mayor of Ayna has announced that the town council has suspended the events planned for this Saturday as part of the patron saint festivities in honor of the Virgin of Lo Alto, which began yesterday and have been tragically marred by this incident.
