A car bomb exploded outside a police station in Los Patios, northeastern Colombia, late Monday night, killing one civilian and injuring 11 others in an attack authorities have linked to the country’s ongoing conflict with armed groups.

The explosion occurred at about 11:15 p.m. on August 31st near the police station in Los Patios, a municipality within the metropolitan area of Cúcuta in the Norte de Santander department, close to the Venezuelan border.

The vehicle had been loaded with explosives and detonated near the police facility, causing extensive damage to the station, police motorcycles and vehicles. The blast also damaged nearby homes and commercial properties and disrupted electricity in the surrounding area.

The explosion sent residents into panic as emergency teams rushed to the scene and began evacuating the injured.

Venezuelan Civilian Dies After Explosion

One civilian was killed in the attack. Colombian police identified the victim as a Venezuelan citizen, 23, who was in the area when the vehicle exploded.

The 11 injured people included two police officers and nine civilians. Authorities transported the wounded to medical facilities for treatment.

One of the officers suffered devastating injuries to his lower limb and lost part of his leg as a result of the blast. Another officer suffered injuries from shrapnel.

The attack also left several police motorcycles burned and caused damage to the police station and surrounding buildings.
