Columbus police released body camera footage Friday showing the moments leading up to a deadly shooting outside a police substation in the University District earlier this week.

Lamine Mahmoudi, 34, was fatally shot by officers early Tuesday morning. Police say he was armed with two knives and did not follow orders to drop the weapon.

Prior to the shooting, Columbus Police Assistant Chief LaShanna Potts said officers were called to a home in the 200 block of Chittenden Avenue between North 4th and Summit streets three times in more than a five-hour span.

Police were first called to a home around 7 p.m. Monday after receiving a report of a person with an “edged weapon” who was bleeding. Officers found the person holding the weapon and called for the Mobile Crisis Response (MCR) Unit.

The unit is made up of Columbus police officers and Columbus Public Health clinicians who are trained in handling mental health concerns and crises.

Potts said the man refused to engage with the officers and police cleared the scene.

Later that night, Columbus police were called again to the home after receiving a report of the same man with a weapon threatening to hurt other people inside.

Police called for MCR again who spoke with the man on the phone. He refused further help and police cleared the scene again.

Around 1:30 a.m., dispatchers received another call regarding the same man holding several “edged weapons.” Officers encountered the person in an alley outside the police substation on South 11th Avenue who approached them.

Bodycam footage shows officers drawing their weapons and shouting several commands for the man to drop his weapons, but he did not comply.

Several officers are then seen firing their weapons and a stun gun at the man.

Officers can then be seen rushing over to provide aid. According to police, one officer secured a meat cleaver and another officer kicked away a second knife.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation is investigating the incident.
