Even today, many in the North skip daily showers opting for "spot cleaning" and heavy perfumes to mask body odor a direct evolution of the 17th-century habit of using fragrance to hide a fear of water. When you add the widespread rejection of bidets in favor of dry paper and the unhygienic practice of wearing dirty "street shoes" inside the home, it’s clear that Europe’s standards are often behind the curve. Given these ingrained habits, the continent isn't exactly in a position to preach cleanliness to the water-centric and shoe free cultures of the East and South.
