An investigation is underway after a Phoenix police officers shot and killed an armed suspect on Sunday evening.

Police said two officers responded to a report of a man trespassing at a Dollar Tree near 37th and Glendale Avenues around 8 p.m.

The man, later identified as 31-year-old Essex Jackson allegedly broke into the back room of the store and climbed on top of a freezer. He fought officers when they tried to arrest him.

Officers attempted to use their tasers to stop Jackson, but he was able to grab one of the tasers, according to police.

Police said at least one officer shot Jackson. He died in the store.

The officers were taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries believed to be sustained in the fight.
