Chicago police officer fatally shot a man early Monday while responding to a domestic disturbance call in the Auburn Gresham neighborhood, officials said.

The shooting happened at approximately 7:35 a.m. inside an apartment in the 7700 block of South Carpenter Street, according to Chicago Police Department Deputy Chief of Detectives Rahman Muhammad.

Muhammad told reporters that officers responded to that location following a domestic disturbance call. Once there, they made their way to an open second-floor apartment and saw an ongoing “altercation” between a 61-year-old man and a woman.

“At that point, shots were fired,” Muhammad said.

The man inside the apartment was struck and was later pronounced dead.

Details remain limited, but Muhammad said a knife was found on the scene. He also said it was a male caller who contacted police about the domestic disturbance, though Muhammad could not confirm whether that was the same man who was killed.

The woman at the apartment was not shot but was taken to the hospital for observation.

Investigators with the Civilian Office of Police Accountability were on the scene following the shooting.

The officer who fired shots is a patrolman, according to Muhammad, and has been placed on routine 30-day administrative duties following the shooting.
