The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has released video of a police shooting that left the suspect in critical condition after police said he stabbed a construction worker.

Police said Benjamin Kubi, 39, pulled out a knife when police approached him during a traffic stop, leading officers to open fire after a taser was ineffective.

A construction worker was waiving cars past a work zone along North Main Street near I-295 when police said a driver stabbed the worker around 11 p.m., Nov. 19. The construction worker was reported to be OK, suffering a stabbing wound to his bicep.

Video shown in a pre-recorded Critical Incident Briefing released by JSO, showed a construction worker rushing from the construction site after the stabbing and officers departing to chase Kubi.

The second and third videos shows officers approaching Kubi in the 400 block of Duval Station Road, a few miles north of the work zone.

They shout at him to lower his hands as he walks toward them. A taser is deployed and an officer shouts they see a knife.

The third video shows Kubi running toward an officer, who flees from Kubi. An officer shouts that shots have been fired by the police. The fleeing officer informs the other she is OK as they call for medical assistance.

Kubi remained in critical condition as of Wednesday. He is charged with attempted murder, attempted murder on a law enforcement officer, and fleeing or attempting to elude a law enforcement officer.

JSO Chief of Professional Standards Mike Shell said the next step of the investigation is an independent inquiry from the State Attorney’s Office. JSO will then conduct an administrative investigation to see if the officers complied with the agency’s policy.
