An El Paso Police officer was hit by a drunk driver as the officer was conducting a field sobriety test on a driver from a previous collision. The officer responded to investigate a crash and during the course of the investigation was conducting a field sobriety test on one of the drivers involved in the collision. As the test was being videotaped in front of the officer’s patrol car another drunk driver struck an assisting patrol car. The patrol car then careened towards the officer and the man who was performing the test. Without regard for his own safety, the officer grabbed the man performing the sobriety test and pushed him out of harms way before being struck by the police vehicle. The officer was thrown violently into the air after being struck by the car. Miraculously, the officer sustained only minor injuries and was released from the hospital the same morning. The man performing the sobriety test was uninjured. Both drivers were subsequently charged with DWI and booked into the El Paso County Detention Facility.
