The shooting happened just after 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 1 in the 600 block of Aurora Avenue after officers responded to a disturbance involving a gun.

The following five San Antonio police officers were involved in the shooting that killed Raul Garza, 69, on Aug. 1.

Joshua Rodriguez — four years of service

John Reyes — two years of service

Aldamaris Flores — two years of service

Luis Cortes Garcia — less than one year of service

Richard Julien — less than one year of service

SAPD said five of the officers fired their weapons.

In the video, a caller tells SAPD’s dispatch that her neighbor was in the front yard waving a weapon.

“You guys have a history with him. I don’t know if he’s mentally or what’s going on with him, but he is out there waving a gun,” the caller told the dispatcher.

When officers arrived, the video shows an officer approaching Garza as Garza backs up. One officer asked Garza what he had in the back.

Garza told the officer, “I got a knife, man,” three times.

At some point, the footage shows the officer beginning to point his weapon at Garza. The officer started to back up and announced that Garza had a gun.

“Sir, drop it. Put it away,” one of the officers told Garza.

“I got it in my back pocket, buddy,” Garza told the officers.

Garza began asking the officers several times if they had a warrant, the video shows.

The officer told Garza to stay where he was, which appeared to be several feet away from the officer.

“Look, baby. Shoot me now. Have you got a warrant? Have you? You’re trespassing,” Garza said.

After Garza repeatedly told officers they were trespassing, the video shows him walking away from officers, crossing the street and stepping onto the sidewalk on the opposite side from the home.

The officer began to run toward him.

“Hey, sir, come over here, sir. Stop right there, sir. ... You need to get on the ground, sir,” the officer told Garza.

The video then shows Garza is back across the street in front of the home, and officers give Garza several commands to face away from them.

“Just relax. Just relax. You’re good. You’re good. We’re good. We’re all fine here,” the officer told Garza. “Just face away from me, please."

The officer then asked Garza if he’d like him to put the gun away, and he did.

Garza held his hands up on top of his head as he continued to face the officer and appeared to be telling him something.

“I need to talk to you, but I can’t talk to you when you have your gun like that,” the officer said.

The officer asked Garza if he wanted him to call his daughter, but Garza appeared to tell him “no.”

Garza continued to hold his hands over his head, but at some point, Garza walked back and appeared to try to grab something from his back pocket.

The video shows the officer pulling his firearm back out and pointing it toward Garza.
