Hong Kong police have arrested a cab driver after his taxi rammed into a pedestrian island in Tai Po, killing one person and injuring at least eight others.

The crash on Kwong Fuk Road took place shortly after 11am on Sunday, near an area heavily frequented by residents shopping for groceries.

A crowd of about 20 passers-by could be seen in online videos rushing to the taxi in the aftermath of the crash, working together to lift it up and free at least two victims caught underneath. Others asked for umbrellas to shield several unconscious victims from the sun.
