A frail man who was repeatedly stabbed leaving his intestines protruding from his stomach today said he was “lucky to be alive” after his attacker was jailed for 14 years. James Atkinson, aged 40 will not be released until he is deemed to be no longer a danger to the public after stabbing Geoffrey Franklin.

A judge told Atkinson he was still a risk almost three years after he stabbed the 64-year-old with a carving knife. Judge Paul Darlow said he stabbed him seven or eight times to the abdomen, chest and back.
