A judge has expressed her frustration at "knife culture" in sentencing a man who slashed two people with a box cutter in a Blackburn (Victoria Australia) pizza restaurant.

Judge Lisa Hannan said it "beggars belief that as a community we can tolerate this conduct of carrying and using knives" in sentencing Tyrone Hooper.

The County Court heard Hooper, 25, who has a violent criminal history that includes weapons offences, began arguing with his girlfriend at the former Three Angels Pizzeria on March 31 this year.

Prosecutor Julian Ayres said the woman told Hooper she wanted to break up with him, then the restaurant owner asked him to leave and with a staff member escorted him to the front door.

Mr Ayres said Hooper produced a small box cutter and rushed at the woman and narrowly missed her head with a chair he swung at her. She was cornered against a window, screaming and raising her arms to protect herself, when Hooper grabbed the woman's left arm and slashed at her twice, striking her head and forearm.

When the restaurant owner picked up a wooden chair and tried to intervene to help the woman, Hooper turned and slashed his right arm, Mr Ayres said, before the attacker left the restaurant.

The woman sustained a superficial five-centimetre laceration on her forearm, an abrasion on her head and associated bleeding and pain.

The restaurant owner sustained a superficial four-centimetre laceration on his forearm.
