Police in north Wales are investigating an incident in which a teenage volunteer assistant referee appeared to be punched while running the line.

The alleged assault took place during a game at Amlwch Town FC’s ground in Anglesey on 27 April. Footage circulating on social media appears to show the assistant referee, who is believed to be 17, pass a man on the touchline in front of a dugout.

The assistant referee, wearing a bib and shorts, turns and the man seems to suddenly lash out. The teenager falls on to a path near the dugouts, prompting fellow players and spectators to run to his aid.

A spokesperson for North Wales police said: “We can confirm that we are currently investigating an assault which occurred at Amlwch Town FC’s ground on Saturday 27 April. We can also confirm that we are aware of the footage which is being circulated on social media and ask that people do not share to avoid potentially prejudicing any legal proceedings.

“Police enquiries continue and we are urging anybody who may have mobile phone footage showing the incident to contact us as soon as possible quoting reference number 24000385680.”

The alleged assault took place during a game against Penrhyndeudraeth FC. After the match, which Penrhyndeudraethwon 8-0, a statement was posted on the club’s Facebook page reading: “A fantastic result and performance from the lads today. Unfortunately, the game was marred by an incident which occurred approximately 15 minutes into the game when a Penrhyn player, acting as a voluntary linesman, was assaulted. The club will not be making any further comments but will support the player as the matter has been reported to the police.” Amlwch Town have not commented.
