Images from security cameras, seized by the Civil Police, show the moment when Leonardo Bezerra da Costa approaches a woman in the street and picks up the phone from his pocket. Then he gets into a fight with her, who relents. The young man, who is deaf and dumb and has mental problems, was beaten soon after by popular and arrested by the Military Police.

The case, which occurred on March 28, in Nova Iguaçu, in the Baixada Fluminense, gained repercussion after the family claimed that Costa was innocent, and pointed out that some of his constitutional rights had not been respected. One of them was the absence of a sterling interpreter at the first custody hearing. However, in the second hearing an expert was called, but Costa did not know the language of the signs. At both hearings his arrest for theft was maintained.
