A man trying to sell a pricey Rolex watch is recovering from minor injuries after jumping on the hood of a moving car during a Facebook Marketplace transaction gone wrong.

Surveillance cameras were recording outside of Steven Mauro’s Massapequa Park, New York, home when he jumped onto the hood of an SUV to stop a man from driving off with a Rolex he says is worth thousands of dollars.

"I never thought in a million years that this would happen,” Mauro told News12 Long Island.

He had listed the watch on Facebook Marketplace for $8,000. After negotiating, they settled on $7,300 and agreed to meet.

"He looked through all the paperwork then checked out the certificate, because what's a Rolex without the certificate of authenticity,” Mauro said.

It wasn't until the man asked him to get in the passenger seat that Mauro said he immediately thought, “Red flag!"

"The engine was already running so he had a leg up on me, but he hadn't had a chance to lock the door yet so I pulled it, and that's when the video starts is me sort of grabbing the door, opening it, and he's shutting it and putting it in reverse,” Mauro said, describing what’s happening as the video rolls.

"He actually probably saved my life because when I was on the hood, the suspect could have just driven straight, normally if the cop wasn't there, but he was,” Mauro said. “He was blocking the road, so he (the alleged thief) decided to go onto my lawn."

Nassau County Police Department Commissioner Patrick Ryder says the driver of the SUV is a scammer.

"There is a similar scam that is going on in New York City with the same type of vehicle and physical description. We're working with New York City right now to try to run that down,” the police commissioner said.

Police say the suspect fled the scene in a Honda SUV with Connecticut plates, according to News 12 Long Island.

Mauro is walking away from the situation having learned a life lesson.
