On April 25, Mussolini gave his last speech at Milan's Teatro Lirico, because of the approaching Allies.

On the same day, Mussolini hid in a German transport that was supposed to take him across the Italian-German border to Austria. From there, the dictator was to flee to Switzerland.

On April 27, in the town of Menaggio, a transport of Italian fascists from Milan joined the group. In the afternoon, at the same day, Mussolini's convoy was stopped by a detachment of communist partisans near the village of Dongo.

Mussolini was recognized and detained, along with other fascists and his mistress (seen next to him in the film).

They were transported to the village of Mezzegra, where they spent the last night of their lives in the house of a local family.

According to the official version on April 28 in Giulino di Mezzegra the firing squad shot him and his mistress (other fascists who were found with Mussolini were later shot).
