A West Valley City man has been arrested after he allegedly ran down his roommate with his car, turned around, and ran over the roommate again.

The 40-year-old suspect has been booked into the Salt Lake County jail for investigation of aggravated murder. He is being held without bail.

According to West Valley City police, they found the body of the victim — Lewis Ricky Yates Jr., 50 — in the road at 3661 S. Market St. (2820 West) shortly before 7 p.m. Sunday, a few yards away from his bicycle. Security video shows a white sedan hitting Yates and “dragging him without slowing down” as it traveled north. The car then “flipped a U-turn” and headed south “at a high rate of speed,” crossing into the opposite lane “and deliberately striking Ricky again,” according to a probable cause statement.

Witnesses identified the suspect as the victim’s roommate. According to police, the suspect told them he is “full of rage” and “made a full confession” when he was interviewed.

The Salt Lake Tribune generally does not name suspects before they have been charged with a crime.
