Phoenix, Arizona — On February 22, 2023, Phoenix Police received a 911 call at 4:43 p.m. of a suspicious man who the caller believed may be related to other police activity noticed in the area of 29th Avenue and Madison Street. During the initial 911 call, the caller stated the suspicious activity was around a U-Haul truck and the caller provided the license plate number of that truck. At about 5:05 p.m. officers checking the area saw a man, identified as 47-year-old Jason Resendez matching the description walking in the neighborhood. When officers tried to contact Resendez, he immediately pulled out a handgun and pointed it toward officers. Officers gave Resendez several commands to drop the gun. He did not. Resendez continued to point the gun towards officers at which time one of the officers fired his handgun. Resendez was taken to the hospital, where he later died. No officers were hurt.
