Milwaukee police say the suspect, Keasean Ellis-Brown, tried to steal a car with three children inside outside the restaurant. He was unsuccessful and was leaving the area, but then saw the driver of that car go inside the Shake Shack.

Keasean Ellis-Brown was wearing a black hoodie and a mask when he attacked the driver. She had picked up a cellphone left behind by Ellis-Brown and two other would-be carjackers.

Almost immediately, off-duty MPD Detective Andy Wilkiewicz ran in from the back of the line.

Wilkiewicz and Ellis-Brown scuffled, and Ellis-Brown pulled out a gun. Though it can't be heard, he shot Wilkiewicz.

Despite being wounded, the video showed Wilkiewicz drew his gun and fired one shot through the glass window as Ellis-Brown runs out of frame.

Wilkiewicz survived the shooting.

Keasean Ellis-Brown spent two months on the run. On March 15, 2022, MPD tracked him to a Milwaukee home.

New video also shows officers' efforts to get him to surrender. He holed up in the house for hours. And after a four hour standoff, he was taken into custody.

This summer Ellis-Brown was sentenced to more than 30 years in prison for the shooting.

Detective Wilkiewicz is still recovering
