Forecasters say fog patches may have caused a massive pile-up on the Sheppey crossing bridge in Kent. More than 100 vehicles were caught up in the huge crash on Thursday morning as they tried to drive through dense patches of fog. Witnesses reported visibility down to 20 yards and motorists say they heard the screeching of brakes for up to ten minutes as drivers tried in vain to stay clear of the accident. The scene on the A249 is now clogged with damaged cars, vans, lorries and car transporters as emergency services tend to those who are injured. More than 200 people are thought to be injured with at least six said to be seriously wounded. South East Coast Ambulance Service said it was dealing with a major incident and has deployed its hazardous area response teams to the scene. Firefighters have been checking vehicles and using hydraulic cutting equipment to release trapped motorists and passengers.
