The report claimed the suspect, a man named Garrett Freeman, had rammed his car into the victim’s vehicle.

On Jan. 10, the Eaton County Sherrif’s Office learned of the initial assault call in Charlotte. The suspect claimed he was ready for a shootout with the police and stated he had over 100 rounds of ammo. Freeman had multiple handguns registered in his name.

On Jan. 11, at 12:28 p.m., Eaton County deputies were sent to the 500 block of N Cochran after hearing that Freeman claimed to be headed to the initial assault victim’s home.

Freeman allegedly expressed that he was going to start shooting before police arrived. Deputies discovered Freeman’s vehicle at 1:02 p.m., and attempted a traffic stop.

Freeman instead fled.

A chase began and a deputy successfully pushed Freeman’s car off the road.

Freeman refused to raise his hands and instead raised a handgun, shooting at deputies. In response, deputies shot Freeman. They performed emergency medical procedures on Freeman before EMS arrived.

Freeman was taken to Sparrow Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Michigan State Police are investigating the shooting.
