It's scary for most to think that they arent in complete control of their lives... that they work, not because they want to, but because they are expected and told to... and most honestly think they are free and not controlled. i think most understand that this is how the world really is but they have a sense of 'but what are you going to do, you know?' and that allows them to live in denial with ease.
