According to legend, there was a night during the Great Siege of Gibraltar (between 1779 and 1783) in which the monkeys, annoyed by the presence of troops, alerted the British soldiers with their shouts so they could get in guard and repel the attack. Hence the saying that as long as there are monkeys left in Gibraltar, the British will continue to maintain their sovereignty over there.
