The incident began when officers attempted to pull over a vehicle involved in an unrelated investigation. The vehicle did not stop, and officers followed it to the area of 41st Avenue and Lydia Lane.

When the vehicle stopped, a man got out of the car, ran, and climbed a wall into a residential backyard. Officers searched the area and found the man as he reappeared in the front yard of a home. The man had a gun in his hand. Officers gave the man directions to drop the gun. The man raised the gun in the direction of a detective and that is when the officer involved shooting occurred. After the shooting, the man held the gun to his head as he moved toward a side gate.

Members of the Special Assignments Unit arrived and negotiated with the man for approximately three hours until he dropped the gun and was detained.
