MILWAUKEE —A deadly police shooting happened after a minor traffic collision on Milwaukee's northwest side at 8:25 a.m. near North 49th Street and West Mill Road in Milwaukee.According to Milwaukee Police Chief Jeffrey Norman, a 40-year-old off-duty officer with 21 years of service was involved in a vehicle accident while driving to work."Both drivers pulled over and exited their vehicles as they were assessing the accident. The driver of the other vehicle approached the off-duty officer and pulled a firearm." Norman said. "That subject proceeded to strike the off-duty officer in the face with his firearm. The off-duty officer drew his department issued firearm and two the two individuals exchanged gunfire and the subject was struck."The other driver, identified by family as 26-year-old Elijah Wilks, died at the scene. No other injuries from gunfire were reported.Norman said the officer was taken to a hospital for treatment. When asked about the specific nature of the officer's injuries, the chief declined to provide details, only stating that the officer "is getting checked out of the hospital at this time."
