The Illinois State Police, ISP, on Friday released surveillance video of an officer-involved shooting that happened at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Mt. Vernon when a correctional officer was transporting an inmate to court for a jury trail.According to ISP, a Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office correctional officer was taking inmate Fredrick Goss, 55, to the courtroom. While in the sally port of the courthouse, Goss was unhandcuffed, because Goss was not to appear before the jury in restraints. After the handcuffs were removed, Goss was transferred from the transport vehicle into a wheelchair. While in the wheelchair, Goss reportedly grabbed the correctional officer’s sidearm and after a struggle, disarmed the correctional officer. During the continued struggle for the firearm, a round was discharged.Another deputy saw the incident on the sally port surveillance camera and rushed to help the disarmed officer. The deputy fired his gun striking Goss, ISP said. Goss was taken to an area hospital and eventually transferred to a St. Louis hospital for treatment of his injuries. This remains an ongoing investigation conducted by ISP and is under review by the Jefferson County State’s Attorney Office. No officers were injured.
